ULI Chicago鈥檚 work on increasing housing affordability recognizes that there is no one magic bullet solution. We need to use every tool in the toolbox, and create new ones when we can, to address our region鈥檚 significant affordable housing shortage.

• Accessory Dwelling Units (ADUs):听 蜜柚视频created the framework for a successful Accessory Dwelling Unit or ADU program in Chicago and continue to work with the City to legalize them citywide. ADUs, which are built by repurposing basement or attic space in existing homes or in backyards, offer a market-driven solution to creating units more affordable than other units in the same neighborhood.
• Reimagining Existing Office Stock:听 Through the LaSalle Street Technical Assistance Panel, 蜜柚视频encouraged the City to repurpose the growing inventory of vacant office space in the Loop into residential and in exchange for valuable financial assistance, require 30% of the new units to be affordable. As conversion projects get underway, we can look forward to a truly mixed-use, mixed-income neighborhood in the heart of Chicago.
• Building Resilient Neighborhoods:听 Through its decarbonization initiative, 蜜柚视频is helping advance strategies for retrofitting older, affordable residential buildings to make them more energy efficient, reducing operating costs and improving air quality for healthier lifestyles.
